Lifestyle & Specialty

What is the difference between a Navy rate and an MOS?

TL;DR — Quick Answer

A Navy "rate" is equivalent to the Army and Marine Corps "MOS." Both describe your military job specialty. The key difference is that Navy rates also incorporate your pay grade into the title, so your rate changes as you promote.

What is a Navy rate

In the Navy, your "rating" is your job specialty (like IT for Information Systems Technician), and your "rate" is the combination of your rating and pay grade. An E-4 in the IT rating is called "IT3" (IT Third Class). As you promote, your rate changes: IT2, IT1, ITC (Chief). This is unique to the Navy. Browse all 89 Navy ratings to see the full list.

What is an MOS

MOS stands for Military Occupational Specialty. The Army and Marine Corps use alphanumeric codes (like 25B for IT Specialist or 0311 for Rifleman) to identify job specialties. Unlike Navy rates, your MOS does not change when you promote. An E-4 and an E-7 with the same MOS share the same code. The Air Force uses AFSCs (Air Force Specialty Codes), which work similarly to MOS.

How they compare for career planning

Both systems lock you into a career field. The Navy system's advantage is that your rating identity stays with you for life, creating a strong professional community. The MOS system's advantage is simpler designation. For career planning purposes, both accomplish the same goal: defining what skills you will develop and what jobs you can perform. Use the rate comparison tool to evaluate Navy ratings the same way you would compare Army MOS options.

Cross-service equivalents

Many Navy ratings have direct equivalents in other branches. Navy IT is similar to Army 25B and Air Force 3D0X2. Navy HM maps to Army 68W (Combat Medic). Navy MA is similar to Army 31B (Military Police). If you are considering multiple branches, comparing these equivalents helps you understand what each branch offers for the same type of work.
