Robotics Warfare Specialist(RW Navy Rating)
Robotics Warfare Specialist (RW) is the Navy's newest rating, established in 2024 to operate, maintain, and employ uncrewed and autonomous systems in the maritime domain. RWs work across surface unmanned vehicles (USVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), and associated payloads, sensors, and C2 networks. The rating was stood up to give the Uncrewed Systems (UxS) fleet a dedicated enlisted career track rather than farming the work out to existing ratings.
RWs are assigned to unmanned squadrons, Unmanned Surface Vessel Divisions (USVDIVs), Task Force 59 / Task Force 66 / Unmanned Task Force elements, and emerging Robotics Warfare Training commands. The rating requires a Secret clearance and attracts sailors from both technical (ET/FC/CWT) and operator (OS/QM) backgrounds.
ASVAB entry standards were published 5 March 2024 and remain in place without temporary reductions.

What the recruiter says vs. what it's actually like.
🫡 Recruiter says
“You'll pilot cutting-edge drones and unmanned vehicles at the tactical edge of naval warfare.”
Most early-cohort RWs are converts who first complete ET 'A' school before a robotics 'C' school; a dedicated RW 'A' school isn't fully stood up until FY26. Day-to-day is heavy on maintenance, troubleshooting, and operator qualification — not just "flying drones."
🫡 Recruiter says
“Brand-new rating means fast promotion and wide-open opportunity.”
💀 Reality
Source: https://news.usni.org/2024/02/22/navy-introduces-new-robotics-warfare-specialist-ratingNavy leaders describe RW as small and highly selective — roughly 100 sailors in the rating as of 2025, with tight conversion quotas. Career path and policy are still evolving.

Getting Started
How do you choose the right Navy rate for you?
Choosing a Navy rate means weighing your ASVAB scores, lifestyle preferences, civilian career goals, and willingness to deploy or go to sea. Start by identifying which ratings you qualify for, then narrow the list by what matters most to you.
Getting Started
What is the ASVAB and what scores do you need?
The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test that determines which Navy ratings you qualify for. Your sub-test scores combine into line scores, and each rating has minimum line-score requirements. Higher scores open more options.
