Who This Is Best For

Best for safety-conscious, methodical individuals who take pride in essential behind-the-scenes work. If you prefer a structured routine over high-visibility action and are comfortable handling hazardous materials, this rate offers steady work with transferable skills in the petroleum and energy sector. Ideal for someone who doesn't need the spotlight but wants a meaningful contribution to every mission that launches.

Cons

    Real Opinions

    +Positive

I would recommend ABF to anyone considering it. The training is solid and the community takes care of its own.

    r/navy|

ABF gave me a strong work ethic and the ability to perform under extreme pressure. Handling millions of gallons of jet fuel on a carrier taught me discipline and attention to detail. The safety training alone is worth more than any classroom — one mistake with JP-5 and people die.

    Indeed|

The fuels side of AB is critical to every single flight operation. ABFs are responsible for the entire fuel distribution system on a carrier — receiving, storing, testing, and delivering fuel to aircraft. The certifications in fuel handling and hazmat transfer directly to civilian petroleum and refinery jobs.

    Critical & Mixed

ABF gets a bad reputation but someone has to fuel the jets. The work is straightforward and the community is tight.

    Indeed|

You are constantly exposed to JP-5 fumes. The long-term health effects are a real concern.

    Indeed|

Advancement is decent because nobody picks this rate voluntarily, so there are always open spots.

    Glassdoor|

Like any rate, ABF has its downsides. Long hours, time away from family, and Navy bureaucracy are real.

    Recruiter vs Reality

What the recruiter says vs. what it's actually like.

    🫡 Recruiter says

The ABF rate offers great training and career advancement opportunities!

Training and advancement are available but vary by command and manning. Ask specific questions about sea/shore rotation, typical duty stations, and advancement rates for ABF.

    🫡 Recruiter says

ABF has great camaraderie on the flight deck.

True, but ABF is one of the more physically demanding aviation rates. You are working in all weather conditions on an exposed flight deck, handling heavy fuel hoses.

    🫡 Recruiter says

ABF keeps the aircraft fueled and ready to fly.

ABF handles JP-5 jet fuel all day. You will smell like fuel constantly. The work involves operating fuel stations, maintaining fuel systems, and ensuring quality control. It is essential but repetitive.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"That rate doesn't exist anymore — let me show you what's available."

    💀 Reality

Every active Navy rate exists. What your recruiter means is that there are no open school seats or contract slots for that rate this week. Rates open and close constantly based on manning needs. If the rate you want is not available, you can wait for it to open or come back another month — do not settle for a rate you do not want.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You don't need to worry about your credit score — the military handles everything."

A poor credit score can prevent you from getting a security clearance, which disqualifies you from many rates. The Navy does not fix your credit. Clean up your finances before you enlist.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You'll never have to worry about money in the Navy."

Junior enlisted pay is low — many E-1 through E-3 sailors qualify for food stamps. BAH helps if you live off-base, but barracks life means sharing a room. Financial stress is common at the junior ranks.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You can always get out early if you don't like it."

Early separation is extremely difficult to obtain. The Navy owns your time for the length of your contract. Hardship discharges and medical separations are rare, slow, and often come with consequences. Treat your contract length as absolute.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"Everybody gets weekends off in the Navy."

Duty sections rotate, meaning you spend multiple weekends per month aboard the ship. Underway, there are no weekends — you stand watch around the clock.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"Nobody actually gets in trouble for small stuff."

NJP (Captain's Mast) can be given for infractions as minor as being late or failing a room inspection. NJP can result in loss of pay, reduction in rank, and extra duty. Small mistakes have real consequences.

    🫡 Recruiter says

"You can always talk to your recruiter if you have problems after you ship."

Once you ship to boot camp, your recruiter's job is done. They move on to the next applicant. Your chain of command handles your issues from that point forward.

    Watch Standing

Flight schedule dependent, rotating duty days

Watch standing is a 24-hour duty rotation where sailors take turns manning critical positions aboard the ship or at their command. The rotation determines how frequently you stand watch and how much rest time you get between shifts.

Watch qualifications vary by command and platform. Expect to qualify within 90 days of reporting.
