Real Opinions
+Positive
“I would recommend TM to anyone considering it. The training is solid and the community takes care of its own.”
“The excitement level amongst the sailors is through the roof. It is the right time for a change like this to light the fire under our sailors.”
–Negative & Mixed
“Like any rate, TM has its downsides. Long hours, time away from family, and Navy bureaucracy are real.”
“TM is a very small rate and advancement can be slow at the senior levels because there just aren't enough billets. The work itself — maintaining torpedoes and weapons handling systems — is interesting, but the niche skills don't transfer easily to civilian careers. Most former TMs end up in general technician or manufacturing roles.”

“TM is one of the most exciting submarine rates.”
💀 Reality
Source: sailor forumsLoading and maintaining torpedoes involves heavy lifting in cramped torpedo rooms. The excitement of a torpedo launch happens only during exercises, not daily operations.

“USS Scorpion was lost in 1968 with all 99 crew. The leading theory: a hot-running Mk 37 torpedo detonated inside the torpedo room. The torpedo may have activated on its own, and the crew had to decide whether to fire it or try to disarm it. They never surfaced.”

Getting Started
How do you choose the right Navy rate for you?
Choosing a Navy rate means weighing your ASVAB scores, lifestyle preferences, civilian career goals, and willingness to deploy or go to sea. Start by identifying which ratings you qualify for, then narrow the list by what matters most to you.
Getting Started
What is the ASVAB and what scores do you need?
The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test that determines which Navy ratings you qualify for. Your sub-test scores combine into line scores, and each rating has minimum line-score requirements. Higher scores open more options.
